The Eagles Nest was packed Friday night as the South Putnam Girls and Boys Basketball teams competed against North Putnam. It was an exciting night of hard-played basketball.

Congratulations to Caroline Hodge, the South Putnam DAR Good Citizen. In her essay, Caroline wrote about how each of us can work within our community to uphold the words in the Pledge of Allegiance by understanding our history and helping others. She states, "What we can do is lift our neighbors up." She explains, "We need to care about those around us, work to understand them and their actions." She concludes, "In this way, we start to interact with our own community's history. We start to shape it, to mold it into one of more understanding, a more accepting, a more equal history." Caroline and the other winners from around the county will read their entire essays and be acknowledged in the DAR Good Citizens presentation at the Putnam County Library on December 5th.

Congratulations to Mrs. Wells and our middle school spell bowl team! They just received their ribbons! The South Putnam Middle School Spell Bowl team placed FIRST in their class and second over all of the teams at the Regional competition. And for the second year in a row, Melissa Anderson was a perfect speller spelling all 9 of her words correctly! We are so proud of the hard work this team put in to do so well against some very large schools and tough competition.

Happy Thanksgiving!! In AP world Mrs. Henry and her students celebrated by analyzing the recipes we all love to see how the Columbian Exchange allowed for us to enjoy so much variety in our life. They all decided that the world is better with milk chocolate, sweet potato casserole, and corn pudding!

Thank you to Jimmy McKanna, the Director of Respiratory Therapy and Pulmonary/Cardiac Rehab at Union Hospital, for speaking with groups of South Putnam students last week about the risks of vaping. He showed evidence of how it is highly addictive and paralyzes the body's ability to protect lung tissue. Thank you Mr. McKanna for volunteering your time to talk to our students about this important topic.

Good day, Eagles! As recently reported via community development reports, Putnam County needs additional preschool and childcare services. South Putnam is developing a grant proposal to help meet the community's needs regarding preschool educational and childcare options. Please complete the survey linked here: https://tinyurl.com/mvhsp7vx Please feel free to share with others so we can get as much community input as possible for the grant application. I've included a QR code as well. Thanks so much! Dr. Smith

Thank you to Mr. Rounds and middle school students who presented a Veterans Day program this week for middle school students. Mr. Rounds served in the United States Air Force and the United States Air National Guard. He introduced students who were recently selected to lay a South Putnam wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Students read their essays sharing what they had learned about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, "a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers and the debt of gratitude owed to them by the nation they served."

6th-grade mathematicians in Mrs. Boyce's class are learning how to calculate unit rates. This week they used a local grocery ad to practice this skill. On Nov. 14, National Pickle Day, students compared unit prices of popular brands. Everyone is looking forward to snacking on crunchy dill pickles later this week!

Congratulations to 7th grade students Mia Boruff and Liana Nascimbene for being selected as the Darrell Wiatt Family Philanthropy Essay Contest Winners from South Putnam. Mia wrote about her grandmother and Liana wrote about her mother. Each student detailed the time, care and concern these women show to the people around them. The Putnam County Community Foundation donated $50 to Beyond Homeless and the Putnam County Cancer Center on behalf of Mia and Liana. Thank you to Dean Gambill, the Community Development Director, and middle school teacher Janet Zimmerman.

The P.I.E. Coalition is sponsoring a food drive this week and during the Girls Basketball County Tourney. The high school and middle school Homerooms that bring in the most food will win a pizza party. Also, if South Putnam brings in the most food in the county, Mr. Burgess and I, Mrs. Gardner, will get a pie in the face during halftime of the consolation game on Saturday night. Please come out and support our Girls Basketball program and bring canned food to support our community. Thank you to all of the county students who volunteered to set up the food display in our Commons this weekend!

The high school fall play, Maid to Order, was this previous weekend, and it was a lot of fun! There were mistaken identities, new love and a house in an uproar! Well done, Mrs. Crum and the entire cast and crew! Also, thanks to Mr. Champion for his help with set, lights and sound.
