"I have only worked in public schools. All students deserve everything they can get and achieve and their opportunity for that is public schools. I work with students who sometimes struggle to get it. There's nothing like seeing that lightbulb go off from their facial expression, telling me, "they got it". I have been asked many times, when will I retire. My reply - why? There is no place I would rather be. Knowing there are students who need our time, experience and wisdom to get them to the goals they are trying to achieve, is part of the learning process that teachers strive for everyday. When those students walk across the stage, with their diploma in their hand, and a smile on their face, that is our reward knowing we had some small part of putting it there. Helping these students is the highlight of my life. Why would I ever not want to be here for that?"

Thank you to Kim Beadles and Jenna Nees with the Purdue Extension Office for guiding students through an activity in Mrs. Boyce's middle school math class. Students participated in "Mathematics on the Farm" during which they gained an understanding of farm commodities by making predictions about harvest utilizing M&Ms.

"I work at a public school, because I feel I may be able, in some small way, to make a difference in someone's life. I may be a "light" the students see."

"I work at a public school, because after my family and religious community, teachers and coaches from public schools had tremendous impact on my life at very important times. I was incredibly lucky to cross paths with some great teachers and coaches who actually cared about me as a student, athlete, and person. I honestly do not know where I would be today if not for some of those wonderful people who entered my life at just the right time."

"I work in a public school to personally witness the time, love and commitment the community (parents, teachers, staff, etc.) puts into our children. My grandfather was a principal for many years and he continued to support children long after his retirement. He always taught us to be lifelong learners and what better way to continue to learn than through teaching."

I work in a public school because . . . "My dad was a teacher in a public school. I have always grown up in a public school and could not imagine teaching somewhere else. I think it gives us a chance to work with many different types of students from many different backgrounds."

Some of our teachers are sharing this week why they teach at a public school. One teacher wrote: "I work in a public school to be a part of something bigger than myself. I am a member of a community, and we collectively live and work together to enrich all of our lives."
